Hi,

I'm Kirsten Dykstra, mom, wife, and photographer/owner of Candid Artistry Photography. My background in Photography includes photojournalism work in high school, showings in art shows during both high school and college, a 1998 BA in Photography from Grand Valley State University (as well as a subsequent BA in English Literature and a minor in Sociology), and candid portraiture of children (my own son is my favorite subject),
pets, and families, since graduation.

After spending years working in the sterile environment of professional photo labs and a commercial studio during college, I knew that candid (often referred to as photojournalistic or environmental) portraiture was a better fit with my personality. I believe that most people photograph better in their native environment, rather than being stiffly and uncomfortably posed in a studio setting--this is particularly true with expectant mothers, small children, and pets.

I also enjoy being able to travel to those special locations that have significance to people, whether it be their home, family farm, neighborhood park, or favorite beach. And I enjoy creating photographic memories that are timeless and intimate, but more importantly, unique.
